Queen Boudicca

This week we have been learning about Boudicca, who was queen of the Iceni people of Eastern England and led a major uprising against occupying Roman forces.

We had a lot of fun learning a song about Boudicca. Here are the song lyrics for you to learn:

Boudicca
Gonna cause a stink,
Won’t be the first to blink
I’m not who you think,
Don’t mess with me I’m…
BOUDICCA!!
My husband Prasutagus died, he was a Celtic king,
I was his Queen, so due to me was half of everything.
Roman law gave half to me, so half was what they got
Till their nasty soldiers came and took the blessed lot.
‘Hey Mister, I say you got the wrong end of the stick!’
His answer turned this sister into one angry chick.

No man, Roman’ll
Push around this woe-man
You won’t get far
With Boudicca.
Bowmen, yeomen
Smash the Roman foe-man!
All say Yah!
Yah!

Boudicca!
I built a massive army headed straight for the city
Beat ‘em all with ease, unlike me it wasn’t pretty
Chopped ’em and hacked, but what made their red blood
curl.
It’s bad enough being beaten, but beaten by a girl!
Whacked them, smacked them,
Boy how we attacked ‘em
Near and far,
Ha ha ha
Flayed ‘em, slayed ‘em
Up and down parade ‘em
Boudicca,
Toughest by far

Colches-ter Lon-don Saint Albans
Everybody talk about –
Dead Romans.
We marched on up the Roman Road that’s known as
Watling St
They trapped us in the forest,
then thrashed us to a defeat.
By now you’ve guessed I’m not the kind of gal who’ll
sit and cry
Be sold as slave to Romans? You know I’d rather die.
They tried to take me prisoner, so I led the Roman boys
on,
Instead of giving in to them I swallowed special pois-on.

Martyr, smarter,
Capture a non-starter
This was our,
Last hurrah.
Slaughtered, dismembered
Our tribe always remembered.
Boudicca
Superstar!
Boudicca
Superstar!

Can you find out some more information about Boudicca to share with the class?  You could even create a fact file for our learning challenge display!

Can you dress yourself up like a Viking, Roman or Anglo-Saxon?

Our science topic for this half term…..

Year 5′s science topic for this half term will be sound.

We’ll be learning about how sound is created and travels as well what materials it will and won’t travel through – we’ll be making some ear defenders to protect our ears from an air horn that Dr Chippindall has acquired!

We’ll also learn how to describe different sounds with scientific terms such as amplitudeand pitch by making our own instruments.

To help Year 5 learn more about sound at home here are some websites to look at. Please post a comment with any others that you find. Thanks.

As a challenge, can anyone find out and explain what is happening here? Hint: It involves the speed of sound

Year 5’s learning challenge for this half term….

For the first half of the Autumn term, Year 5′s learning challenge will be:

Who invaded Britain and why?

Throughout the term, Year 5 will be learning about different invaders and settlers including the RomansVikings and Anglo Saxons. We will be thinking about when and why these different groups invaded Britain and how they changed Britain after they settled here. We will also be generating own questions that we want to find the answers to which we’ll post as a comment on this post soon.

To help Year 5 get started with their research, here are some links to websites with information on invaders and settlers but please post anymore you find in a comment. Thanks.
